Discovering America’s small-town museums

19 Oct

The United States is not the first place that comes to travelers’ minds when they think of museums. Outside of the coasts and Chicago, museums aren’t a major attraction in this country. Or so you’d think. When was the last time you heard of a European tourist going to Oklahoma city or Jackson, MS to go to museums?

But believe it or not, the United States has more museums than McDonalds and Starbucks combined. (Source: see article link below)

You read that right.

When you count the many small, rural mom-and-pop museums, America isn’t such a bad place for museums. Even in very rural counties, there are many of these. Sure, these museums may not be the Louvre or the Uffizi, but who says museums should have to be big? These small museums have an atmosphere and a small-town homeliness that many larger museums don’t.

All in all, it’s another reason to go off the beaten path and away from just the places your travel book praises.
